Outsource PPC Services: Outsourced PPC Management Without a Retainer
Outsourcing PPC means handing the day to day running of your paid search and paid social accounts to someone outside your business. Most companies reach that decision the same way: the ads are already running, the budget is already committed, and nobody internally has the hours to keep the account honest week after week.
The three usual options price the same job very differently. A US in-house PPC manager runs roughly $70,000 to $110,000 in base pay before taxes and benefits. A freelancer is commonly $1,000 to $3,000 a month. An agency is typically $500 to $2,000 a month at small spend, and very often 10 to 20 percent of whatever you spend on ads. That last model is the one that quietly hurts: a percentage fee grows every time you scale, whether or not the account got any better, and it gives your vendor a financial reason to recommend a bigger budget.
AdBot is an AI media buyer for businesses that want the work outsourced without that arrangement. Give it your URL and a budget, and it builds the campaign structure across Search, Performance Max and Shopping on Google plus Advantage+ on Meta, writes the ads, launches inside accounts you own, and optimizes every day. The fee is flat, from $297 a month, and never takes a share of ad spend. AdBot has not opened for sale yet, so these are our planned launch rates and every button joins the waitlist.

A percentage fee prices the budget, not the work
Running a $3,000 a month account and a $30,000 a month account are not ten times apart in effort. The keyword research, the negative list, the ad testing and the weekly checks are broadly the same job. A 15 percent fee turns that into $450 against $4,500 for work that did not change by anything like that multiple, and it means every budget increase you approve raises your own invoice. Flat pricing removes that conversation entirely.
Most outsourcing failures are coverage failures
The accounts that quietly bleed money are rarely the ones nobody understands. They are the ones nobody looked at for eleven days. A freelancer takes a holiday, an agency reassigns your account manager, an in-house hire resigns in March, and the search terms report goes unread while budget keeps clearing. Whatever you outsource to, ask what happens on the days your person is not there.
Keep the account in your own name
This is the single clause worth reading before you sign anything. If campaigns are built inside an agency-owned Google Ads account, then leaving means starting from an empty account with no conversion history and no learning data, which is expensive in a way that is hard to see until it happens. Work built inside accounts you own stays yours, including the historical data that automated bidding depends on.

The same job priced four ways. What separates them is not just the monthly number, it is whether the fee grows with your ad spend, how long you wait for live campaigns, and who owns the account when the relationship ends.

What is PPC outsourcing?
PPC outsourcing is paying an external agency, freelancer, offshore team or software service to plan, build and run your pay per click campaigns instead of doing it in-house. The outsourced provider handles keyword research, campaign structure, ad copy, bidding, negative keywords and reporting, while the business keeps ownership of the budget and, ideally, of the ad accounts themselves.
In practice it covers a wide range of arrangements. At one end is a freelancer who logs in for a few hours a week. In the middle sit US agencies charging a retainer or a share of your ad spend, and offshore providers who place a dedicated specialist with you from around $3,500 a month. At the other end is software that performs the daily optimization work directly.
The reason the category exists is straightforward. Paid search rewards consistency more than brilliance. An account checked properly every few days beats an account someone redesigns twice a year, and very few businesses under fifty people can protect that time internally against everything else competing for it.
How much does it cost to outsource PPC?
Outsourcing PPC costs roughly $500 to $2,000 a month for a small to mid-sized account at a US agency, rising to $1,500 to $10,000 or more as ad spend grows. Freelancers commonly charge $1,000 to $3,000 a month or $80 to $150 an hour. Many agencies price instead as 10 to 20 percent of ad spend, and some go as high as 30 percent.
Those numbers are for management only. They sit on top of whatever you pay Google and Meta, which is the part most first-time buyers underestimate. A business spending $5,000 a month on ads and paying a 15 percent management fee is really spending $5,750, and the effective rate on the management line keeps climbing in absolute terms as the account scales.
The hourly model deserves a moment of scepticism. At $80 to $150 an hour, ten hours a month is $800 to $1,500, and ten hours is not much for an account with several campaigns, seasonal creative and a live search terms report. Hourly billing also creates a mild disincentive to build the automations and negative lists that reduce future hours. It is worth asking any hourly provider what they would do differently if they were paid a flat fee.
Our full breakdown of what PPC management costs works through each model with worked examples, and the companion piece on PPC management pricing models covers where percentage-of-spend billing stops making sense.
Should you outsource PPC or hire in-house?
Hire in-house once paid media is a core part of how you sell and the account needs someone who understands the product deeply. Outsource while paid media is one channel among several, the spend does not justify a salary, or you need live campaigns sooner than a hiring cycle allows. The dividing line is usually whether ad-driven revenue can carry a full salary with room to spare.
The salary itself understates the real number. A US PPC manager sits somewhere around $70,000 to $110,000 in base pay depending on seniority and source, and the loaded cost once you add payroll taxes, benefits, software licences and the management time to keep them productive is meaningfully higher. Against a $5,000 a month ad budget, that is a hire spending far less than it costs.
There is also a single-person risk that rarely gets priced. One in-house specialist means one point of failure for every campaign you run. When they leave, the institutional knowledge of why the account is structured the way it is tends to leave with them, and hiring a replacement takes months during which the budget keeps spending.
Agencies weighing the same question from the supply side will find the arithmetic laid out in our guide to outsourcing PPC versus hiring in-house, and agencies that want to resell delivery under their own brand should look at white label PPC instead of this page.
Is it better to outsource PPC to an agency or a freelancer?
Choose a freelancer for a single platform, a modest budget and direct access to the person doing the work. Choose an agency when you need several channels covered at once, cover during absences, and someone accountable above the individual. Freelancers usually win on cost and responsiveness. Agencies usually win on continuity and breadth, and charge for both.
The honest weakness of the freelance route is capacity. One person managing eight or ten accounts has a finite number of hours, and yours competes with everyone else. The honest weakness of the agency route is seniority drift: the strategist who won your business is often not the person in the account six months later, and junior execution against a senior price is the most common complaint buyers have.
Offshore providers occupy a third position that the search results for this term are full of. A dedicated offshore specialist from around $3,500 a month is real value if you can supervise the work and accept the time zone. It is a staffing arrangement rather than a service, which means the quality ceiling is set by how well you manage them.
What should you look for in a PPC outsourcing company?
Five things separate a provider worth paying from one that quietly costs you money. Ask about each of them before signing, and treat vague answers as answers.
Account ownership. Campaigns should be built inside a Google Ads and Meta account registered to your business, with the provider given access rather than possession. If the answer involves their account or their MCC holding the campaigns, you are renting your own history.
Fee structure. Ask specifically whether the fee moves when your ad spend moves, and what happens at the next budget tier. A flat fee is easier to forecast and removes any argument about whether a recommended budget increase was in your interest or theirs.
What actually happens weekly. Ask which tasks are performed every week rather than which reports are sent. Search terms review, negative keyword additions, bid and budget adjustments and creative rotation are the work. A monthly PDF is not.
Contract length and exit. Three to twelve month minimum terms are common in this market. That is not automatically unreasonable, but it should buy you something, and you should know what you keep on the way out.
Proof before commitment. A provider confident in the account should be willing to show you what is wrong with it first. A free Google Ads audit or a PPC audit is a low-risk way to compare how two vendors read the same account.
Can you outsource PPC to software instead of an agency?
Yes, and it is now the fastest-growing option for accounts under roughly $50,000 a month in spend. The daily work of paid search is highly repeatable: read the search terms report, add negatives, shift budget toward what converts, pause what does not, refresh creative that has fatigued. That loop is exactly what software runs well and exactly what a busy human runs inconsistently.
What software does not replace is judgment about the offer, the market and the landing page. If the product is priced wrong or the page does not convert, no bidding strategy rescues it. The right way to read the AI option is as outsourced execution rather than outsourced strategy, which for most small and mid-sized advertisers is the part that was going undone anyway.
AdBot sits in that category. It builds the account from your URL, launches across Google Search, Performance Max and Shopping and Meta Advantage+, and then optimizes every day for a flat fee. If you are starting from nothing rather than moving an existing account, the Google Ads account setup page covers the build itself, and AI PPC management software explains how the daily optimization loop works.
Businesses that would rather have a human agency relationship, with strategy calls and a named contact, are better served by a traditional provider. Our flat-fee PPC agency alternative page sets out where each model fits.
Who owns the ad account when you outsource PPC?
It depends entirely on how the account was created, and it is the clause most buyers discover too late. If your provider built campaigns inside an account owned by your business and was granted access, everything stays with you when the relationship ends. If they built inside their own account or manager account, you may leave with nothing but a report.
The practical cost of losing an account is not the campaign structure, which can be rebuilt in a day. It is the conversion history. Smart Bidding learns from months of accumulated conversion data, and a brand new account starts that learning from zero, which usually means a period of higher cost per acquisition while it recalibrates. That is a real bill, and it is invisible in any contract.
AdBot works inside accounts registered to you. The campaign structure, the history and the data remain yours if you ever stop, which is the arrangement any outsourcing agreement should meet as a minimum.
